Tips to get what you need in a divorce

Divorce is often very difficult. It involves separating from the person you thought you would spend the rest of your life with, dividing marital property, and working out a custody schedule for the kids. While you may be tempted to rush through the process to get it over with as quickly as possible, doing so could have a very negative impact on your new life.

Before you rush through the settlement process, take a step back and try to focus on what you want and need once you finalize the divorce. Follow these tips to get what you need in a divorce.

Prepare for the long haul

It is rare that a couple ends a marriage quickly and with no hard feelings, especially after more than 20 years of marriage. You and your husband have spent the last two decades building a life, raising your children and accumulating high-value property. Do not expect an easy or quick divorce. You may spend months negotiating which of you gets the vacation house, how to divide your joint interests in your West Texas oil leases, or if you should sell your home in Dallas and split the proceeds.

Be good to yourself

Since a divorce can typically take an emotional and physical toll, it is important that you take care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise and get plenty of rest in order to cope with the challenges ahead.

Be analytical

It is important to examine the settlement's possibilities with an analytical mind. A financial planner can help you determine what option will best meet your future needs. Keep in mind that once you agree to a settlement, there is no going back and asking for more.

Don't make split-second decisions

Even if you feel like you cannot spend another moment arguing about the proposed settlement, do not sign without sleeping on it. Take time consider the effects of the settlement and if it is really sufficient for your financial security.

Focus on the future and how your life will be once you make it through the process. This will help you avoid getting bogged down in the negativity that often goes hand-in-hand with a divorce. Remember that the pain, sadness and frustration is only temporary and that these emotions should not dictate your decisions during the settlement process.
