Summer time and the livin' is easy

Catfish are jumpin' and the cotton is high

Your daddy's rich and your momma's good lookin'

So hush little baby, don't you cry.

Summer – the days are longer, the temperature soars, ice cream is a special treat and the return to school seems far away.  For many folks summer means a slower pace, relaxation and rejuvenation. 

Other folks are not so fortunate.  Domestic violence does not take a summer vacation. The Texas Department of Public Safety claims 1 in 3 Texans will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. 

The authorities at The Family Place state that in each of the last three years there has been a spike in the number of calls to their crisis hotline during the summer months.   

Question – what is the cause for the increase in crisis calls ?

Answer – there is no single cause, there are a number of contributing factors.

Question – how can we tell whether there are domestic abuse problems?

Answer – there are some signs to watch for –

Does a person –

cancel plans at the last minute and offer strange reasons for doing so ?

            seem consistently afraid of making their partner angry ?

            worry that their partner may disapprove of a person's friends ?

            worry that their partner will withdraw financial support ?

            claim they need to make frequent calls to their partner when they are not together ? 

What to do – observe, offer support, provide information, take a stand against domestic violence.
